ASK JJ

Dear JJ:
If you wake up and work-out within an hour is it okay to eat after which would be approx 2 1/2 hrs after being up?

I usually get up around 5 a.m., work-out 6-7. Eat arond 7:30.

Thanks,
Larry

Dear Larry:

First of all, let’s look at your schedule again and ensure that you are getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep. If you are getting up at 5 then I’m confirming that you get in bed by 9:30 and are asleep by 10? If not, you may want to revisit that wake time and get up at 5:45 and immediately hit your workout.

If you are going that long before breakfast you should have a “mini-meal” prior to your workout. Just take your breakfast and divide it into 1/3 per workout and 2/3 post workout.

You can make your shake first thing in the morning and drink 1/2 before you go and then have the rest when you get back. If you add a tsp of d-ribose, a tsp of carntine and a heaping tsp of glutamine to your shake it will help you workout harder and recover faster. Toss an Emergen-C packet in to your post workout shake to help lower cortisol levels and protect your body from the oxidative stress generated from your workout.

Workout Shake Recipe
2-3 scoops of protein powder (Whey Cool, OL Prescribed Nutrition, Paleomeal DF)
1 tbsp PaleoFiber
1 tsp carnitine powder
1 tsp d-ribose powder
1 heaping tsp glutamine powder
1 cup frozen organic berries
1/4 cup coconut milk
3/4 cup water

Add to post workout part – 1 Emergen-C packet

And eat a rice cake with a dollop of almond butter with your post workout shake or a PaleoBar.
