I am NOT a fan of artificial sweeteners AT ALL. I recommend Xylitol, an all natural polyol which comes from birch trees. It is alkalizing, good for your bones, anti-bacterial and suppresses stomach emptying which can help keep your appetite under control by suppressing ghrelin.
I frequently get asked about Stevia. I think this is a good alternative but I don’t like it as well as xylitol as it doesn’t have any of the nutritive qualities of xylitol. It also has zero calories, xylitol has 2.4 per gram (contrast with sugar at 4 cals per gram) and I wonder if it could cause some calorie dysregulation.
So bottom line, my first choice is xylitol and my second choice is stevia.
