It’s a dry heat… Last week I was in Phoenix and this week I am home in the desert. I realized how much I have acclimated to this weather when I chose to sit outside at lunch in Phoenix with a few other brave souls. I thought it was great since it hadn’t hit triple digits yet! Everything is perspective, right?  My dog however, isn’t as enthused so we are now out walking early and late.

Before I headed out to Phoenix I did some cooking and taped some podcasts with my buddy Jeff Moore from WildThingsSeafood.com. He’s been on the program for about 2 months, has lost 23 pounds and counting, and is chronicling his journey in his blog. You will love this - when I met him he had The Virgin Diet  book… which he hadn’t read and he said, "But JJ, what will I eat?"  I answered, "Um Jeff… don’t you own a SEAFOOD company???" Secrets of Eating Psychology

Most of us have been taught to believe that good nutrition is about eating the right food. Of course, this is true, but there’s more to the equation. What we eat is only half the story of good nutrition. The other half of the story is who we are as eaters. That is, what we think, feel, believe, our levels of stress, relaxation, pleasure, awareness, and the inner stories that we live out all have a powerful and scientific effect on nutritional metabolism.

So the good news is this: you can change your health and your nutritional status without changing anything you eat, but by changing you the eater. In my 30 years of work in nutrition and psychology, I’ve seen so many profound breakthroughs around weight, overeating, and a long list of health conditions when we began to practice some of the simple principles of eating psychology. Here’s what I mean:

1.  Stress can put weight on – relaxation can take it off.

It’s fascinating how anxiety, fear, judgment and even negative self-talk can create a physiologic stress response in the body. This means that we generate more cortisol and insulin, two hormones that signal the body to store weight, store fat, and stop building muscle. We literally change our calorie burning capacity when we’re stressed! But when we learn to ease into life and breathe more deeply, the body enters a physiologic relaxation response. In this state, we create our optimal day-in, day-out calorie-burning metabolism. Far too many people adopt stressful weight loss strategies – impossible to follow diets, overly intense exercise programs, tasteless food, extremely low calorie meal plans – all of which can create the kind of stress chemistry that ensures our weight will stay put. It’s time to relax into weight loss.

2.  Happiness is the best digestive aid.

When eating during anxiety or stress, many people report symptoms like heartburn, cramping, gas, and digestive upset. Once again, during stress, the body automatically shifts into the fight-or-flight response.  And in the moment the stress response is activated, something very interesting happens – our digestive system shuts down. It makes perfect sense that when you’re fending off a hungry lion, you don’t need to waste energy digesting your breakfast. All the body’s metabolic energy is directed towards survival. So, you could be eating the healthiest food in the universe, but if you aren’t relaxed, digestion and assimilation will never reach its fullest potential. Fortunately, the remedy for creating your most powerful digestion is this: eat with a big smile.

3.  Overeating – it’s simpler than you think.

Most people think they overeat because they have a willpower problem. Well, here’s the good news – you’re not a willpower weakling. The problem for many overeaters is that they don’t actually “eat” when they eat. Meaning, we aren’t always fully present with a meal, aware of its taste, or simply feeling nourished by the food. Because the brain requires taste and satisfaction, it misses out on a key phase of the nutritional experience. The brain literally thinks it didn’t eat, or didn’t eat enough. And it simply screams “Hungry!” So, you can dramatically decrease your overeating by increasing your awareness and presence at every meal. It’s that simple.

4.  Make sure you have enough Vitamin P – Pleasure!

Far too many people are taught to believe that pleasure is something frivolous. Well, it’s actually required by our biology. All organisms on planet Earth are programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain. So if you’re eating and not paying attention, the brain will drive you to seek more pleasure via overeating. What’s worse, if you’re stressed while eating, the excess cortisol in your system actually de-sensitizes us to pleasure – so you’ll need to eat more food in order to get the pleasure you’re seeking. The bottom line is this: If you want more pleasure from food, you don’t need to eat more of it. Simply relax and enjoy, and the body will naturally experience the pleasure it seeks. And the great news is, since pleasure catalyzes a relaxation response, it actually fuels digestion and assimilation.

Hopefully, you’ve noticed that there’s way more to good nutrition than simply the food itself. We bring all of ourselves to the table – our hopes, fears, thoughts, feelings, dramas, and dreams. And the more we include a well rounded nutritional profile – Vitamin R – relaxation, Vitamin P – pleasure, Vitamin S – slow, and Vitamin L – Love – the more we can literally nourish ourselves on every level.

The Virgin Diet changed my life! I never knew it was possible to feel this great and I owe it all to The Virgin Diet. The Virgin Diet has motivated me to share it with as many people as I can. Through my blog, Pretty Little Blog, our Virgin Diet Facebook Group has grown from 3 friends to over 200. I still have no idea how so many people found our group!

Before The Virgin Diet my life consisted of nonstop headache, skin breakouts, lack of energy, back, shoulder and neck pain, depression and unexplained dizziness. I thought that I would have to live with these symptoms my entire life and that they are normal things to feel, but by following The Virgin Diet ALL of my symptoms disappeared and so did the extra weight I had been carrying after having 2 children. Before The Virgin Diet I felt like I was missing out on having fun with my kids because my symptoms kept me from being able to live the life I had wanted to. I had been going to physical therapy for back and neck pain and it helped, but it was more of a temporary relief. Being dizzy also kept me from living a normal life, I never knew if I was going to feel dizzy that day and I even worried about whether or not I'd be too dizzy to do everyday things! I felt like I was living in a nonstop fog, nothing helped and now I know it was 100% food related! I had immediate relief from my symptoms and found in Cycle 2 that I am intolerant to gluten, dairy, eggs and soy! No wonder I was such a mess!

My sister-in-law had told me about The Virgin Diet and I immediately thought I could never do it. I got motivated to lose the weight before a vacation and just stuck with it to a T.
