Wow it is November 1st already! I honestly have no sense of the past 2 months. It is like it just disappeared yet so much has happened.

The best news is Grant's rapid recovery...literally from a Glasgow 3 coma score (same as being a brick I have been told) with a torn aorta, bleeding brain, 10 fractures and being told there was no hope to only one cast left, his aortic stent holding strong and him starting to talk and follow commands. I feel like every day is a miracle watching this and also watching how my other son has been during the process. He is the one who talked Grant back to us in the first place and he continues to be Grant's #1 encouragement and motivation to be strong. So cool!

The past 2 weeks have been insane - I have been spending most of my mornings and evenings at the hospital but had to dash over to San Francisco to do my first ever PBS pledge drive at KQED, speak at Brendon Burchard's High Performance Academy and then tape my  training videos for The Virgin Diet. It was so fun to be at KQED as I was an intern there nearly 30 years ago. I was also runner-up in the Miss Haight-Ashbury contest at that time too (a fun little piece of trivia) but got beat by a transvestite who mixed martinis as his talent.

5 Reasons to Ditch Gluten

I coined the term weight loss resistance, which I’ve spent the past decade studying. One thing I learned along the way is that food sensitivities play an enormous role in stalling fast fat loss.

When I ask clients to remove soy, dairy, eggs, gluten, and a few other foods, their symptoms disappear. They start burning fat again. They look and feel better. (People sometimes even ask if they had “any work done.”) They have the sex drive of a 20-something.

From that knowledge, and my clients’ success, evolved The Virgin Diet. I developed a 3-phase plan to pull these foods. I show you common culprits that could be stalling fat loss and creating these miserable symptoms. I didn’t leave any stone unturned, and I am with you every step of that journey to your lean, sexier, healthiest self.

Many of these problems – inflammation, for instance, and leaky gut – doctors and other professionals overlook. I tackle them all head-on. And I give you a concrete plan to temporarily eliminate these foods, re-introduce them and see how you react, and determine whether they can remain a part of your long-term diet or not.

I get it: you want results. With The Virgin Diet, you get them, and quickly. Clients often lose 7 pounds, in fact, in the first 7 days. Headaches, fatigue, bloating, and other symptoms disappear. They want to stick with this program for life.

What many diets overlook is the maintenance plan. In The Virgin Diet I show you how to burn fat but also how to keep it off forever. Chances are, any roadblocks you’ve experienced along the way, I’ve been there. I’ve overcome it and I show you how too.

I tackle 7 common problematic foods in The Virgin Diet. Many of them you might consider “healthy.” You might be shocked to learn those bland, tasteless diet foods you eat regularly stall fast fat loss.

Gluten is one of those 7 foods I’ll ask you to temporarily remove. Here are 5 reasons why going gluten-free can burn fat, eliminate symptoms, and feel and look your best.

  1. Gluten creates gut permeability. Gluten contains a protein with the unwieldy name zonulin, which damages the tight junctions in your gut. Things not intended to slip through your gut wall suddenly get through, creating an immune response. Delayed reactions, which can occur hours or days later, include joint pain, brain fog, gastrointestinal problems, anxiety, and depression. You may not connect, for instance, the headache you have Wednesday morning with the wheat pasta you ate the night before.

  2. Gluten triggers inflammation. Besides the immune-related delayed symptoms, gluten-induced leaky gut creates inflammation. Chronic inflammation contributes to every degenerative disease, including diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and obesity. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association1 found that people with gluten sensitivity had a higher risk of death. The results were shocking: while people with full-blown celiac had a 39% increased risk of death, that number increased to 72% for people with gluten-triggered inflammation!

  3. Gluten is low in nutrients. Someone on my social media recently commented that without gluten, you’re missing out on key nutrients. Au contraire! Gluten-containing foods are notoriously low in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients compared to vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Don’t believe me? Compare nutrient rock stars like spinach or almonds with whole grain bread or wheat pasta. Whole foods like spinach and almonds come loaded with naturally occurring nutrients, whereas breads, pastas, and other processed gluten-containing foods contain small amounts of cheap, fortified nutrients.

  4. Gluten inhibits nutrient absorption. Not only does gluten not bring much nutrient-wise to the party; it also steals nutrients other foods bring! Gluten-triggered permeability, for instance, inhibits your gut from absorbing nutrients and making vitamin B12. Gluten also contains phytates, an anti-nutrient that can block mineral absorption.

  5. Eating gluten makes you fat. Gluten contains lectins, which can bind to insulin receptors and create insulin resistance. They can also bind to your intestinal lining, causing you to store more calories as fat. To make things worse, lectins can trigger leptin resistance, which makes you hungrier even after you’ve eaten a full meal. Couple lectins with leaky gut, inflammation, and poor nutrient levels that can stall metabolism, and you’ve got a surefire way to pile on weight. Most gluten-containing carbohydrates also raise your blood sugar, which triggers an insulin response. Higher insulin levels do one thing really well: store fat. When people with weight loss resistance pull gluten, they feel night-and-day better and the scales start moving again.
