Note From JJ

Hi %$firstname$%,

It’s been a seriously crazy past few weeks - I did 9 pledge drives for my Sugar Impact Secret public television show, went to a black tie wedding, spoke for a few thousand docs at A4M in Vegas and then taped a show in LA. I went to 11 cities, crossed time zones 6 times and lost my luggage twice in 2 weeks.

Now I am home rejuvenating my adrenals so I thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to my secret weapon, Dr. Alan Christianson. Dr. C is my personal doctor and he and his awesome wife Kirin are two of my very close friends.

His new book, The Adrenal Reset Diet, comes out in less that 2 weeks, on December 30 (but you can preorder now on Amazon!) and to celebrate he has created Dr. C’s favorite Adrenal Reset Recipes Cookbook as a gift! Be sure to check out my JJ Recommends for the link to grab yours while it is available.

I am also including a great article and recipe from him on foods that heal the adrenals. You can bet I am making this (and bonus, it is cheap and easy!!!) and you will be delighted to find that it is approved for both The Virgin Diet and The Sugar Impact Diet. That’s no real surprise because Dr. C and I are very inline in our thinking.

I realize that I just put my adrenals to the test, but I am betting you are feeling it a bit right now too. Yes it is the best time of year with all of the great holiday songs (okay I am a dork, I tried to get my kids to sing Jingle Bell Rock in the mall with me this week - um, no MOM) and the lights and decorations, but it is also crazy busy and a bit stressful…so do yourself a favor and take some time out for yourself too. Or as I always say, buy the first gift for YOU! That way you know you got what you wanted!

Make it a magical week!

JJ

P.S. Remember to grab Dr. C’s cookbook gift - you can use them on my plans too!

Feeding Your Adrenals

Alan Christianson, NMD

You may know that your weight, your energy, and your sleep are only good if your adrenals are healthy. We have all experienced this. The new diet is easy to stick with until the rough breakup. You can’t sleep because of the new job. Your energy crashes in the afternoon because you’ve overdone it for far too long. It is amazing that a couple of tiny pieces of tissue, each about the size of a blueberry, can make or break your health.

Besides the obvious craziness we live with did you know that electromagnetic fields, plastic by-products, and your home’s heating system can also stress your adrenals? It is easy to feel like a big block of time free of drama is just not realistic.

The good news is that even if we can’t fix all the things wrong with the modern world, food can heal our adrenals.

Food can be the solution, not the enemy. Foods can heal the adrenal glands due to their:

• Essential nutrients
• Antioxidants
• Effects on blood sugar
• Direct effects on cortisol

Here are my favorite adrenal friendly foods you may already be eating.

• Wild Rice: Along with being gluten free, wild rice is a grass, not a grain. It has 30 times the antioxidants of brown rice and twice the protein.

• Shiitake mushrooms: Along with being a great immune tonic, these are the densest known food source of pantothenic acid (B5,) an essential nutrient for the morning production of adrenal hormones.

• Rosemary: The slightest whiff of rosemary is enough to measurably improve the adrenals’ cortisol output throughout the entire day.

You can even use these foods together for a quick breakfast you can make in minutes.

California Dreaming Breakfast Soup
Serves 4, Prep time: 3 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes
2 ripe medium avocados, pitted and peeled
1 quart organic vegetable broth
1 cup fresh shiitake mushrooms, sliced
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
2 free-range chicken breasts, cooked and diced
1/2 teaspoon fresh organic ginger
1 cup pre-cooked wild rice
1 pinch of fresh rosemary

Place the avocado pulp, broth, and turmeric in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a 2-quart saucepan. Add the mushrooms, chicken, rice and the ginger to the pan and gently heat until warm, garnish with rosemary. Serve warm or refrigerate for up to 72 hours.

Vegan modifications: substitute 1 cup cannellini beans for the chicken breast.

Along with particular foods being good for your adrenals, eating to stabilize your blood sugar can also help them since they have to work to balance it. Here are three easy ways to improve your blood sugar and make life easier on your adrenals:

  1. Avoid sugar. JJ’s right, sugar is public enemy #1. Learn about its sneaky sources and avoid them like the plague.

  2. Go easy on uppers and downers. High amounts of caffeine give you energy because it causes you to dump lots of stored sugar into your blood stream at once. If you have less of it, you will likely feel less driven to have alcohol at night to unwind.

  3. Resist at all costs. Resistant fiber is the hottest food discovery of the decade. One serving in the morning can give you a metabolic boost that burns fat for over six hours. You can get it from navy, northern, or cannellini beans as well as banana flour and boiled potatoes.

The great news is that your diet truly can help. A recent clinical trial showed that in just a month, foods can improve your adrenals even if they are crashed when you start. ¹

Sugar Impact Success Story

Lorrie was one of our original Sugar Solution Program Challengers, and her story is below.

Meet Lorrie today on this VIDEO and learn how her journey has continued!

Lorrie Valinsky

Please share how your sugar stronghold was impacting your life.

For the past 11 years, following my radical colon cancer surgery, I had to adapt my social life due to my GI issues, especially after eating. I would meet my girlfriends for lunch, but instead of continuing the afternoon with after lunch activities, I would beg off and head home. I was fatigued and in need of being close to a bathroom. The same held true for when my husband and I went out with other couples in the evening. I could join for dinner, but not the “ands”... and a movie, a play, a concert, drinks. I accepted this as a small price to pay for having my life.

About a year ago, I was flipping TV channels and heard this woman discussing The Virgin Diet. Amused and intrigued by the name, I stopped flipping and started listening. I liked what I heard. It made sense. Immediately, I downloaded the book, The Virgin Diet and started my journey with JJ. I lost 32 pounds rather quickly and had improved energy and decreased joint pain. All was well until I hit the dreaded plateau. I still wanted to lose another 20 pounds, but nothing was happening. I kept eating according to The Virgin Diet, but instead of staying the course, being the sugar addict that I am, I let sugar back in my diet. I was frustrated and thought...what harm can a little sugar do? The answer is... a lot!

My joint pain returned. My energy level took a nosedive in the late afternoon. I gained back 20 of the 32 pounds I had lost. And worst of all, my chronic GI problems (due to colon cancer surgery 11 years ago) became increasingly debilitating. How could such a sweet, natural, innocuous thing like sugar wreak all this havoc?

I decided that I needed to get this addiction under control, once and for all. I committed to The Sugar Impact Diet and steeled myself for the inevitable headaches and moodiness that have always accompanied my previous sugar withdrawals. I started the program a week before Halloween. I wanted to challenge myself with all that good chocolate around. So I stayed in Cycle 1 for two weeks. The headaches and moodiness never appeared. Once I started Cycle 2, my energy level was high and even all day long, my joint pain was greatly reduced and my GI issues improved radically. My intense sugar cravings were gone, as was 15 pounds and five inches each from my waist and hips! And all in five weeks!

Somewhere during Cycle 2 of The Sugar Impact Diet, I also realized that after lunch with a friend, I wasn't feeling the need to run home. I had abundant energy and no GI problems. Then my daughter came home for Thanksgiving. We decided to jump into the fray and do Black Friday at a local shopping area. We shopped for 2 hours, had lunch, then shopped for another 5 hours! We had a blast! When we got home, it dawned on me what I was able to do. When I pointed it out to my daughter, she flew across the room and hugged me saying, “That's right! I can't believe I have my old mom back!"

I am back. I feel like my old self! The Sugar Impact Diet has given me all the "ands" back in my life. This is huge!
