Recharge With Red Light
What happens inside your mitochondria when you expose your body to near-infrared light?
This week, I invited Bjørn Ekeberg, philosopher of science, author, and co-founder and CEO of Recharge Health, to unpack why light may be one of the most overlooked tools for recovery and healthy aging. We dive into how red and near-infrared light interact with your mitochondria, why recovery is an active biological process, and how the right dose of light may support everything from muscle soreness and chronic pain to fatigue and sleep. Most importantly, we break down how to separate legitimate photobiomodulation from all the red-light hype so you can use light strategically to stay strong, active, and resilient.
What you’ll learn:
08:39 How NASA discovered that red and near-infrared light could reactivate the body’s natural cellular healing processes.
14:28 Why near-infrared light penetrates deep below the skin to stimulate muscle and tissue cells, unlike surface-level visible red light.
20:50 How clinical studies show near-infrared light can be more effective than pharmaceuticals at reducing musculoskeletal pain and inflammation.
22:21 Why active recovery accelerates muscle repair and can shorten hospital ICU stays by up to 30 percent.
27:10 How applying targeted light therapy to mitochondria-dense organs like the gut and liver supports systemic healing and heart rate variability.
34:41 How near-infrared light increases mitochondrial efficiency and energy reserve potential in both athletes and fatigued individuals.
40:54 What key features, such as active cooling fans and direct skin contact, separate effective light devices from low-power novelties.
52:58 How getting morning sunlight and early-day near-infrared light exposure resets your circadian rhythm for restorative sleep.

So you’re encapsulated when you go into space or if you’re in a space station. But when it ended up happening, what they started discovering with their astronauts is because of this lack of light, if they got a cut or a bruise or some sort of injury, it wouldn’t heal. They tested this out by basically giving astronauts an encapsulated space, bringing a red light with them. And then they found that actually the healing process started again. This light is the body’s own currency, so to speak, that actually needs for healing. And this is the case for you or in us here on Earth as well.

So the studies show clearly that near infrared is more powerful than using pain medications to reduce pain.

Musculoskeletal pain, I mean, that’s huge. That is huge. Most forms of pain, most general pains, are musculoskeletal in nature. And many of them stem from inflammation or are related to inflammation.

And trust me, this will make your day. So subscribe now@subscribeetojay.com and text me your review. Let’s keep thriving together. Most women just assume that as they get older, aches happen, takes longer to recover from a workout, and those workouts just take a lot more out of them. And that’s just the way it is. We’ve been told to rest it off, take something for the pain and wait. Today’s guest, who is a philosopher turned CEO, believes that the real lever here isn’t rest. It’s your cell’s energy production. And this is something NASA figured out, by the way, for astronauts decades ago. So I’ve got with me Bjorn. Now, let me see if I know how to say your last name. Right, Eckerberg. Right, Eckerberg. All right, I’ve got Bjorn Eckerberg in the studio. He is the co founder and CEO of Recharge Health.

These guys are the creators of FlexBeam. You’re going to hear more about that today. But we’re going to dig deep into light, all kinds of light, from sunlight to red light. And then he also has, and this is kind of fun, a PhD in Philosophy of science and he’s the author of Metaphysical Experiments. So you’re probably wondering, what’s a philosophy of science guy who wrote a metaphysical book doing talking about light? That’s what we’re going to find out. So, Bjorn, welcome.
04:26
Speaker 1
Thank you so much for having me.
04:28
Speaker 2
You know, were talking last night at dinner how so much of this is R and D, like the things that seem like they have no common thread, no path, all of a sudden makes sense when you look back at your career. So you started out getting your degree in philosophy of science. I did not even know there was such a thing, which I’m not even sure what that is. And now you are focused on light. How did this happen?
04:53
Speaker 1
Yeah, so there was an interval in between, but I had a long. I had a long stint of just deep diving into what really deeply, interested me. And I got an opportunity to dig into the bigger philosophical questions. And actually some of the bigger philosophical questions are around how we know what we know. And what’s the difference between believing in something and knowing something. When does science produce evidence and not. This is something I studied for years and I was particularly interested in how this Worked in physics and in cosmology. So cosmology is the grandest possible scale of the universe in which we make lots of assumptions about what goes on out there. And a lot of that comes down to energy and light and interpreting how light moves, et cetera.
05:38
Speaker 1
So I already had a background nerding out on these kinds of questions and writing a book about it. And then several years Later, I met Dr. Zulia Frost, who’s now my co founder and clinical director of our company. And she had been working with light and some forms of electrical stimulation, that’s another form of energy, for decades in the professional clinic. And people would come to her to see her for various problems. And within the medical establishment, she was pure fringe. She had a western medical background, but she had learned to sort of steer her questions toward more complementary ways of seeing the body and understanding the body.
06:17
Speaker 1
So when I met her and she was introducing me to the whole body of evidence behind red light, near infrared light, how actually light changes us and modulates us, at first I was a little bit blown away because this was not covered at all in the physics sense. I had understood the universe from an energy perspective, but not how it actually applies to us as humans. And this is a science that’s now about 30 plus years old. So it’s relatively recent that we’ve begun to understand how we are impacted by sunlight. And sunlight is a really vast spectrum of energy. And there are certain wavelengths of light that actually, that we nourish ourselves from. And this is becoming more evident now.
07:01
Speaker 1
But this was, to me, and I think to a lot of listeners, and maybe to yourself at some point, is a very strange idea that light can have this fundamental energetic kind of impact on us, maybe because we take it for granted, because the sun is sort of always there.
07:17
Speaker 2
But yet we know about things like seasonal affective disorder, right? And we know that when you wake up in the morning, if you see the sun, it basically can improve your cortisol rhythm. Like so we know these things. So it. I don’t know why it’s so. It seemed to be so fringe, you know.
07:36
Speaker 1
No. And it’s strange. And I think that there’s a shift happening now where it’s becoming recognized. I think there’s actually more of this body of evidence that’s entering also into broader awareness around the effects of the sun for health and so on. But the medical establishment, I think, is a little bit behind the curve on this one. I think the most interesting research is happening sort of right on the fringe, but substantially how it always is. How it always is, actually. And NASA, as you mentioned initially, was also part of driving more research into this area as well, and more applied research. So looking at the actual specific technology, what kind of light do you need, what kind of dosage, wavelengths, et cetera? Right, yes.
08:15
Speaker 2
When they’re up in their pods, they don’t have anything, do they? I mean, they just have fake light.
08:23
Speaker 1
So you’re encapsulated when you go into space or if you’re in a space station, because if any part of your body was exposed to the kind of radiation and force that’s outside of our atmosphere, you would be toasted, so to speak, Right?
08:38
Speaker 2
No. Really toasted.
08:39
Speaker 1
Yeah. So they’re like. They’re fully encapsulated, but when it ended up happening, what they started discovering with their astronauts is because of this lack of light, if they got a cut or a bruise or some sort of injury, it wouldn’t heal. And this they tested out, seeing some of the research on near infrared and red light, specifically some of the earlier studies that were done on this. And they tested this out by basically giving astronauts in an encapsulated space, bringing a red light with them. And then they found that actually the healing process started again. And so one of the insights that came from this kind of experimentation is that this light, these specific wavelengths of light, is the body’s own currency, so to speak, that actually needs for healing.
09:23
Speaker 1
And this is the case for you or in us here on Earth as well, like this, if we don’t have this light, if we just sit in a cave all the time, we’re actually missing out on a very key ingredient, so to speak, or a part of the energy spectrum that the body is actively using all the time. That was, I think, the big insight from the NASA research.
09:42
Speaker 2
I mean, that’s a huge insight that is. Was there, like you’re building this company all around red and infrared light. Was there a moment, as you’re digging into this research, that you just completely changed how you thought about our bodies, our health, our recovery?
10:01
Speaker 1
Yes, there was. And that was in the encounter with Dr. Zulia, who had been working for decades on this before. And I think one of the things that she had come to understand from also studying anything from traditional Chinese medicine to energy in physics and quantum physics and trying to understand how the body works. It is really what is in Chinese medicine is called xi, is actually an energy principle. And this all maybe sounds a bit off or strange to us with Western mindset, but. But what has been known For a long time outside of our understanding of Western medicine, is that your body is an active participant in any form of healing. Right. You are actually an energetic being to begin with.
10:44
Speaker 1
And there is a tendency in our medical frameworks where we’re very good at isolating chemistry, isolating molecules, and to think of the body as a passive recipient toward, like from. You give it a certain substance and then it responds biochemically. This we know how to perfect. But the missing piece in between is how the energy moves within the body, the signaling between your cells. And this is where light also comes in as a kind of power source and also as a signaling source. So when you understand some of this, you also understand that the body is active. So what we wanted to do, or the insight that this was founded on, is giving your body the capacity or the conditions to increase its capacity to recover for itself. Because your body actually is a healer. Like it’s non stop trying to repair itself. Right.
11:34
Speaker 1
And it needs certain conditions in order to do that properly.
11:39
Speaker 2
You know, a big part of my next book, the metabolism fix, it’s build muscle first to burn body fat and to restore metabolic balance. And within it there’s these pillars, there’s you’ve got to fuel correctly, you’ve got to move correctly, and you’ve got to recover correctly. And I think for most people, especially in that area, when they think of recovery, they think of sleep. They might think of taking a day off getting a massage. But this sounds like this could be one of the big missing pieces of recovery.
12:14
Speaker 1
I think it is because it’s often overlooked the capacity side of it that basically when you are recovering, you are not just lying down flat and waiting. Your body’s actually then really engaged in hard biological work. That’s really when the work is starting to happen after a monster training session that sounds like you just had at the gym. Now your body is in a mode in which it actually needs all possible the right sources of energy to now start regenerating cells and repairing. So recovery is a very active biological state.
12:45
Speaker 2
I think that’s a very important point because that’s not how most people think of recovery as active.
12:50
Speaker 1
No, it’s often like just give it time and it will heal on its own kind of thing.
12:54
Speaker 2
Right. Or you know, think about like even in a sports setting where like you have the trainer work on you.
13:00
Speaker 1
Yeah.
13:00
Speaker 2
It’s not what are you getting your body to do to heal. It’s you’re relaxing while you’re getting massage or you’re getting a nice bath or whatever. Well, you’re not relaxing then, but you know what I mean? So let’s dig into red light, because I think there’s. Well, there’s a lot of misconceptions now because you can buy a little red light on Amazon for, I don’t know, $20, you know, and then you can buy red lights for thousands of dollars. And first of all, let’s just dig into what do they do. And now there’s definitely some science coming out about it. So. So how do they work? What do they do? Let’s start there with some science to.
13:42
Speaker 1
Back that up, for sure. So it covers a range of the spectrum. So imagine the. I mean, the sun is a full spectrum of energy.
13:51
Speaker 2
So it has red light, but it has other things.
13:53
Speaker 1
It has all kinds of other things and what we usually call light. When we talk about light, we think of light as what’s visible to us, like what we can see. That is actually a very tiny part of the spectrum of energy that we get from the sun. So most of the energy outside of the visible light, outside of the red, green, and blue, is either in what’s called the ultraviolet range, which is like light that you cannot see, but that is actually acting on us. This is the kind of light that also produces vitamin D in your body when it interacts with your body. And there’s an even larger part of the spectrum that we cannot see, but that we can feel, and that’s we call the infrared.
14:28
Speaker 2
And we feel it how?
14:30
Speaker 1
Heat. It’s associated with heat. So when something is warming, like if you look at the beautiful sunset that you have here in Florida, you can see that it’s glowing red, right? But the feeling you get on your skin, the warming sensation, that is the infrared that’s kicking in. And infrared is a very wide part of the spectrum. But this is like the specific part of this that is proven to be most powerful in the body is called near infrared. It’s very close to the red on the spectrum. It’s a very narrow bandwidth. Light in this range has the particular capacity that it can penetrate the skin. These wavelengths are just long enough to go underneath the skin. And this is how the muscles and the tissue underneath your skin can actually take it up.
15:16
Speaker 1
So there is a difference between red light, which we usually talk about red light therapy, but red light is mostly works on the skin level. So that’s why you probably see a lot of it in cosmetic applications and face masks and all kinds of things that is supposed to be good for your skin. And it can be if you have the right kind of output and so on.
15:37
Speaker 2
How would you know?
15:39
Speaker 1
How would you know? Yeah, let’s get to that question.
15:41
Speaker 2
Yeah, I’m going to put that hold on there because that’s I think one of the biggest questions out there. How would you know?
15:47
Speaker 1
Much confusion. It’s such a jungle out there now with all kinds of claims around it, but a lot of it is centered on red because red has the potential to rejuvenate skin, to improve collagen production and the skin elastin production. So no wonder it’s a popular kind of add on to in the beauty world. But the real powerhouse on the spectrum is the near infrared light.
16:09
Speaker 2
And that’s when you can’t see, that’s.
16:10
Speaker 1
What you can’t see. And often if you have a red light panel of some kind, it usually has red and near infrared in it. I think it’s just more complicated to say red and near infrared light. So we just shorten it to red lights. But it’s the near infrared that your body really is craving and needing. And that’s the only light that’s capable of penetrating through the skin and actually stimulating your cells directly. And that feeds cellular energy basically. And so this light is what you want to make sure that you have in the right range and the right kind of output in order to make a difference your cells.
16:45
Speaker 2
And this is something you get so from the sun you get both of these things.
16:49
Speaker 1
Yeah, you get that. Naturally, if you are out for a long time, you will also have absorbed a lot of near infrared quite naturally, a lot of light in the infrared range.
17:00
Speaker 2
And does it matter where you live in the world?
17:03
Speaker 1
Absolutely. Okay, absolutely.
17:05
Speaker 2
What time of year it is because you’re Norwegian. So were talking about that last night. I’m like, oh my gosh, your winters. But if you’re closer to the equator, like what’s. What if someone’s just living in the United States, let’s say in Florida, hypothetically, could they. I mean, how long would you have to be out in the sun to get the benefits that you need?
17:29
Speaker 1
This varies a lot. And then you have all these complicating variables, like if it’s cloudy and if it’s like what time of day and so on. But you generally have to be out for quite a while in order to get like a real dose of near infrared. At least at the level that we provide in our device. Like with one session, you need. Even on a peak summer day, you probably need to be out for about half an Hour to get the same kind of energy input that you can get from 10 minutes from our device.
17:54
Speaker 2
Oh, wow. And then you also.
17:56
Speaker 1
Wintertime in Norway, we’re talking hours. So if you’re in the north or if you’re listening in Canada or something and it’s wintertime, you practically cannot get that kind of light consistently. Like in that time of year, you would need hours of exposure.
18:09
Speaker 2
Now, if someone’s wearing clothes, they’re wearing sunscreen. Does that block all of this?
18:16
Speaker 1
Sunscreen wouldn’t block the infrared, but clothes would definitely absorb most of the light. And then when you add on that we mostly live at sort of a modern life indoors, air conditioned spaces and cars and so on, I think for most people it’s hard to get that light consistently. Right. Maybe if you live in an extremely sunny place where it’s always even, and if you have the privilege of spending an hour every morning just outside, for example, you probably are getting your enough for a baseline.
18:45
Speaker 2
But are you also getting other things.
18:48
Speaker 1
That could be problematic that you also will get? You will get UV light that may be aging you in certain ways, depending on. Depending on your skin and so on. So by supplying red light therapy or near infrared light, you’re getting only those wavelengths that your body’s actually converting into energy and not all the other stuff.
19:08
Speaker 2
Okay, well, that’s a big selling point. Besides the fact that who’s outside for 30 minutes in the right time of day, naked?
19:17
Speaker 1
Yeah, that’s a different.
19:18
Speaker 2
You’ll get arrested. So there’s that problem. Right.
19:23
Speaker 1
There’s a lot of different friction points to get consistent light. And I don’t think that one replaces the other also. I mean, having sunlight and getting sun exposure is crucial to your circadian rhythm. It’s crucial to just like your joy of being alive. But this particular bandwidth of light has this power that you can concentrate it in certain form and you can target it and directly where it’s needed. So you can give your body a particular kind of energetic boost that you wouldn’t get from just generally being out in the sun for 10 minutes or something like that.
19:55
Speaker 2
So what types of things could this be used for?
19:58
Speaker 1
Yeah, and this is where it gets interesting, right, because it can be used for so many things that it sounds kind of spinning wild a little bit, almost like an infomercial. Is what I thought about when I first heard about it. Started reading the science behind what’s been studied and what looks promising and all of the stuff it sounded like from my point of view, sort of an American TV show that’s like, wait, there’s more. Now there’s this and there’s also this. But if you look at it broadly, pain and inflammation are probably the best studied and best documented applications. It’s also what FDA approved for like over 20 years ago for the infrared. This is for the near infrared. The red doesn’t have the same kind of properties. It borders on some of the same.
20:41
Speaker 1
But if you want pain relief and you want inflammation reduction, which has been shown to be very powerful in studies. More powerful than like pharmaceuticals to block.
20:50
Speaker 2
Really?
20:50
Speaker 1
Yeah, these are studies that go back to the 90s, early 2000s. So these people are ignoring in nature and so on. They’re just ignored.
20:58
Speaker 2
Yeah, that’s what we. We joke about. The whole group of studies that are being ignored because big Pharma does not profit with this information getting out. So there’s no reason for it to get out.
21:08
Speaker 1
The studies are there and they’re not being blocked or censored. They’re just ignored. That’s the easiest way to counter this kind of thing.
21:13
Speaker 2
Okay, so the studies show clearly that near infrared is more powerful than using pain medications to reduce pain.
21:23
Speaker 1
There’s a particular study showing this in good publications. I can link it for your.
21:27
Speaker 2
What type of pain specifically?
21:29
Speaker 1
So musculoskeletal pain.
21:31
Speaker 2
I mean, that’s huge.
21:32
Speaker 1
That is huge. That’s most forms of pain. It is less effective for certain kinds of neurological pain, autoimmune diseases that are more complex and so on. So it’s not 100% of all kinds of pain. But most general pains are musculoskeletal in nature, and many of them stem from inflammation or related to inflammation. So that’s something that was well established also when NASA started doing its research. Then recovery, muscle recovery, this is also a huge field. So muscles and ligaments are also full of cells that have these mitochondria in them that I know you talk about also on your show. The importance of and improved recovery times is now also well established in a lot of studies of different kinds. So recovering from.
22:21
Speaker 1
There was a large study came out last year that followed people in an icu, so intensive care unit, how quickly they could come, like, be released from hospital. These are people that are then completely incapacitated, more or less, and lying in beds and in closed rooms. The control groups that got. Or the groups that got red light therapy, on average were released 30% faster.
22:44
Speaker 2
Why on earth wouldn’t they be using this?
22:46
Speaker 1
Yeah, there’s talks and some progressive doctors have picked up on it. And there’s some really amazing people out there like making the connections and pushing this. Right. That it’s like we have to think differently about how we do our hospitals and how we, I would think our.
22:59
Speaker 2
Regenerative medicine docs are the best ones because they’re already open minded enough. Yeah.
23:04
Speaker 1
So it’s, it’s changing, but it’s changing slowly. And I think the, some of the science and the awareness is kind of moving faster. But muscle recovery, we worked with our device with a lot of physiotherapists and clinics over time and the general, the average recovery time for say a very simple like muscle pull for example, or a pulled muscle would be also around 30% faster if you use red and near infrared light. So we’re not talking tiny percentages. We’re talking about substantial improvement. So this is also why it’s been adopted widely by a lot of sports athletes and so on. Because if you can improve your recovery at this level, it can have significant effects. But really this effect is available to everyone. Right, right.
23:48
Speaker 2
I mean, who doesn’t have a little pain periodically. Yeah.
23:52
Speaker 1
And I think one of the most important things if you’re not a high performing elite athlete and that your life depends on these sort of like these percentages. Probably the biggest friction in maintaining a good healthy routine if you want to build muscle and build strength, is that pain and that blocks you, prevents you from actually getting up and being active. Right. So this is a tool that is actually designed to help you, give your body the condition so that you can go back and do more training.
24:21
Speaker 2
Okay, so it sounds like it would be great for osteoarthritis.
24:24
Speaker 1
Absolutely. We work a lot with. Osteoarthritis is one of many conditions.
24:30
Speaker 2
Okay. So beyond pain and inflammation and we know the red light portion can help with collagen. What else?
24:37
Speaker 1
Yeah, so those would be the most significantly studied in which there are hundreds of different kinds of studies that clearly show a pattern like pain, inflammation, recovery of muscle.
24:48
Speaker 2
Because I would imagine, you know, it’s in the exercise field, it’s pretty much impossible to do a double blind placebo controlled study. You’re doing exercise, you know, how do you blind someone? But here you could totally blind them to it because you could have a near infrared. That wasn’t really.
25:05
Speaker 1
Yeah, we’ve done this with, we have sham devices. We have a second study out now that’s being done that’s using exactly this principle. So we give Them a fake flex beam like one with just bicycle lights and the other group gets flex beam and the other one doesn’t do anything. And we measure strength output from lat pull downs, et cetera over time and exertion of effort and over several weeks. This has also been done in larger scale in peer reviewed studies that show significant results for people who use red light therapy on performance. So being able to lift stronger or increased strength and output clearly correlated in those studies. These are more recent and they’re not as there’s not as big of a body of evidence yet as there is for pain, inflammation and muscle recovery. But this is a very interesting field.
25:53
Speaker 2
Okay. Now you were mentioning something last night, dinner, which is why I came home and wrapped this around my puppy who loved it because my puppy has something going on with her liver. So I have a one year old puppy who’s getting ozone treatments. And I was like, she’s very fancy. But you mentioned something about like people having issues with their guts in this helping and stress in this helping and raising hrv. What about all of this?
26:24
Speaker 1
Yeah, so this is where it for us got also a lot more interesting since we started. We first built this device about like five years ago. The first one came to market and then it was initially designed because it’s a belt like shape, it curves around your body. It’s quite obviously intuitively designed for muscle groups or for an elbow or knee joint. Put it anywhere on your body. We thought about in terms of muscles and like body parts. And then we started getting reports from people who also have their own tracking devices, stuff like oura rings and things like this and started showing sort of correlations in their sleep patterns. Gut was a very turned out to be a very popular use. And so we started looking more into these kinds of issues that we didn’t initially design it for.
27:10
Speaker 1
But when you have a device that is targeted and can be right on the skin, and this is part of the original vision of why we wanted to produce it this way you are able to be when you’re closer to the skin. With a powerful enough output, you can penetrate more deeply and locally target certain cells or wherever you want to targeted. This matters because the mitochondria in your cells like that produce the energy in your cells, they are all over your body, but they’re particularly clustered in organs. So in your gut, in your lungs, liver, for example, ovaries, you have much more mitochondria in those areas. So at first we didn’t think about that. We Thought about muscles, we thought about inflammation, and then we realized people were using it kind of as a spot treatment for the liver.
27:57
Speaker 1
And this is plausible when you understand the mechanism of how it works. So with your dog, that you could actually put one of the light pods over the liver area, then you would be stimulating, like sending near red, near infrared light energy straight into the liver so that the mitochondria that are more packed there can actually convert that to energy and therefore help your little dog repair.
28:21
Speaker 2
What also is interesting, and you mentioned it last night too, or I think Jeff said something about this at dinner, was that he used it for sleep and it just helped him calm down. And you know, you’ve met my puppy. I have a chihuahua puppy. She’s a year old, she’s a little crazy. And the minute I put this on her, like last night I put it on her and she just kind of nuzzled in and just chilled out and she just did it again. And it’s like, it’s very calming too. What’s going on?
28:48
Speaker 1
Yeah, a lot of people report a calming effect. So with anxiety and sleep, these are popular protocols that we have. There is less established science on it. So for us, this is still something we really encourage people to try it because it’s totally harmless too, to try it and to sort of report back or share their data. And we’re doing studies and case studies in this area. But I wouldn’t like call it a sort of a treatment claim that is just like use FlexBeam for a day and treat your anxiety. It does seem to work really well for a lot of people. But this is a more novel form of application than we originally intended it for. But again, it can make sense if you think of one of the effects from stimulating your mitochondria in this way.
29:38
Speaker 1
One of the chain reactions that happens in your cells is also to release nitric oxide and to improve circulation. So if a lot of anxiety is bound up, for example, like stress response in your nervous system, powerful red and near infrared light can actually get the signaling system to flow better and that can have a calming effect. And I’m sure my co founder and doctor would have other sort of hypotheses,.
30:03
Speaker 2
All sorts of things.
30:05
Speaker 1
It’s something that’s worth trying.
30:08
Speaker 2
Well, this happens a lot with drugs, is they started with, I mean, look at Viagra, right? They’ll start for one thing, and then they go, oh, look, it does this too. So this sounds like we haven’t even begun touch all the different things that it could potentially do. And probably it’ll happen with people playing around with it. And since there’s no risk for it, then why not?
30:31
Speaker 1
If you stay within the general guidelines that we prescribe, there is no risk of sort of like overdoing it or getting an adverse reaction or anything like this. And I’d say, I mean, the gut health issue is particularly important because it’s one thing is the gut itself, the intestinal lining. I mean, your body is using a lot of energy. It needs a lot of energy to digest, right? So it’s with an established mechanism of this mitochondrial energy pathway, it is very plausible that you’re actually fueling energy into that area and it’s helping the body to do its work better.
31:06
Speaker 2
Even when you’re doing all the right things. Your strength training, staying active, prioritizing protein, keeping the muscle you built over a lifetime gets harder with age. Now our parents were told to accept that it’s just getting older. I don’t buy that. And that’s why I use Timeline powered by Magpure. Here’s the real story. Muscle isn’t just about strength or looking good. Muscle runs your metabolism, protects your balance, preserves your independence, and determines how powerfully you age. And what most people don’t realize is that muscle loss isn’t only about hormones or workouts. It’s about cellular energy. As we age, our mitochondria, those energy engines inside our muscle cells, become less efficient. Now, when your muscles can’t produce energy, well, it’s harder to maintain strength, function and resilience. That’s where mitopure comes in.
31:58
Speaker 2
It’s the only clinically studied form of urolithin A, a postbiotic shown in human clinical trials to support muscle strength and function by helping renew mitochondrial health at the cellular level. I love this because it works with your training, not instead of it. Now, strength training is the signal, protein is the building block. And mitopure supports the cellular energy that allows your muscles to actually respond and adapt. Mitrepure gummies make it simple. Two a day, sugar free, vegan, non GMO and independently certified for quality. And let’s not forget, absolutely delicious. So if staying strong is part of your longevity strategy, and I sure hope it is, visit timeline.com JJvirgin and get 20% off your order. Hey, JJ here. And if you’re over 30, there is something happening right now inside your body that most people have never heard of. It’s called senescent cells.
32:54
Speaker 2
These are old cells that stop doing their job, but they do not go away. They hang around they take up space, they drain your resources. And as they build up, you start to feel it. Less energy, slower recovery, more stiffness. Just not feeling like yourself. Now, for a long time, we thought this was just aging, but thankfully, now we know better. Scientists discovered that certain plant compounds called senolytics can help your body clear these cells. That is a huge breakthrough because this is not about covering up aging. This is about addressing one of the root causes. And that’s why I’ve been using Qualia senolytic for years. It combines nine of the most researched senolytic ingredients in one formula designed to support your body’s natural ability to clear out these zombie cells. And here’s what makes it so easy.
33:51
Speaker 2
You only take it two days a month.
33:54
Speaker 1
That’s it.
33:55
Speaker 2
No daily routine, no complexity, just two days a month to support how you age. And again, I’ve been using it for years. And it’s one of those things that once you understand it, you will never go without it. Now, if you’re over 30, this is something you’re going to want to start now, right now, not later. So go to qualityoflife.com Virgin Wellness and use code Virgin Wellness for an extra 15% off. That’s qualiacinolytic@qualialife.com Virgin Wellness with code Virgin Wellness. Because it’s time right now to start taking control of how you age. What exactly is it doing for the mitochondria? Is it like biogenesis? Is it mitophagy? What is it doing?
34:41
Speaker 1
It appears from the studies we have done in our most recent study where we tried to measure mitochondrial efficiency in the blood, that is mostly about increasing efficiency and about reserve potential. So it doesn’t seem to. First of the studies that we’ve seen does seem to suggest that you produce more mitochondria, but that the mitochondria gain efficiency and your potential is improved. So again, back to the capacity kind of argument. I mean, you know what, the study showing the heart strength training has the chance to actually produce new mitochondria. Right. The bio. Biogenesis of mitochondria that I think is unique to strength training. There’s a couple of studies that have shown near infrared light also has that potential, but there are not so many yet.
35:30
Speaker 1
So this is something I expected there to be a lot more studies around because VO2max, for example, is a biomarker that’s now increasingly studied in connection with red light therapy, and that’s also tied to mitochondrial efficiency.
35:45
Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah. But if you have more mitochondrial efficiency, then you can Train harder. Then you’ll have mitochondrial biogenesis. Because you trained harder.
35:52
Speaker 1
Yeah. So there’s a. It’s a compound effect.
35:54
Speaker 2
Yes. It will complement each other. So there are all these red light devices out now. And again, I’m just gonna use red light to talk about red light and near infrared. How on earth do you know what you’re getting? What, what to look for? If you’ve got a legit device, all of that, because it is. And then how to use it? As I was telling you earlier, I have some devices at home, but it sounds like you need to be right up on them to really get the benefits.
36:25
Speaker 1
Yeah. So it can be a jungle, I think, to navigate this with all of the different applications. But if we take the most common one is panels, I think that has both red and near infrared light. There are many high quality panels that often have, like, if you have a reputable brand and with good tech specs and so on, has good power output, usually has the right wavelengths there. The issue is often about consistency and consistency of dosing and consistency of use. Those are the two key things that will determine whether you really get good outcomes from using red light therapy. So if you are very close, I think you were telling me you went, you go very close to the panel. Right.
37:10
Speaker 1
If you are as far away as they recommend, typically 12 to 15 inches away from the panel, in order to not get the radiation from the panel itself, the light that’s emitted, it’s cut by about 70%. Right. By the time it reaches your skin. So a lot of the output in the panel is theoretical, like it’s just at the surface of the panel. And the further away you are, the less you get. Now, this can be okay if you are just always standing at the exact same distance from the panel. Right. This is one of those problems we wanted to solve with FlexBeam is that you don’t have to worry about how far am I away, how much light am I getting. It’s really crucial you get the right dose.
37:47
Speaker 1
But you don’t want to be thinking about measuring with a tape measure every time how far away you’re standing from a panel. So that’s one consistency aspect and the other is how easy it is to actually use it every day because you’re not going to get results only from just using it one time or every now and then when you get the idea that, oh yeah, I have that panel, maybe I should use it tonight and then tomorrow it’s like back in the drawer or back in the basement.
38:10
Speaker 2
Now I’D seen some I think was related specifically. I don’t know if they meant red and near infrared because it was skin related, but they were like, you shouldn’t do this every day. But it sounds like what you’re saying is you should do it every day and maybe twice a day. What’s the dosing? Does it vary based on what you’re trying to accomplish?
38:30
Speaker 1
Yeah, it does somewhat. And that’s why we created protocols and guidelines that also come with our app. With devices that you can actually look up sort of guidelines for how long and how often you should use it does vary by condition. So your dog needs a lot less than you do after a heavy lifting period, for example. But all of that can be like. We can give you relatively clear guidelines for that. So that part varies. But consistency over time is what builds results. This is undeniable in all the research we’ve been doing. And the effects that people are reporting back, the one that clearly see noticeable effects are the ones that use it regularly.
39:05
Speaker 2
And over what period of time does it usually take for someone to notice something?
39:10
Speaker 1
For acute injuries, if you just pulled your muscle at the gym, you may experience it within the first day relief and that it changes right away. But for most things that are ongoing and chronic, expect a week, two weeks, often of consistent use. And it’s okay to take a day break here and there. It doesn’t have to be every day exactly at time, the same time. But the point is to establish a rhythm because consistency is also a signaling to your body. Right. So this is not red light therapy is not just that sort of the kind of the magic thing you pull out for a couple of times and then it’s over. It’s something to embed into your Life quite easily, 10, 20 minutes a day or however much is recommended.
39:49
Speaker 1
And then you keep using that over time, you will see things like baseline HRV improvements and all kinds of effects downstream from that. So making it a part of your recovery routine is what’s most effective.
40:01
Speaker 2
So as far as the wavelengths and knowing what you’re getting, how do you know?
40:08
Speaker 1
So the wavelengths are often similar in most devices, but if you buy something often, here we come to the other class of devices, right? I talk. I mean, generally there are some good panel companies out there that produce good outputs and tech specs and so on. I wouldn’t go for anything that doesn’t have sort of like backed up with reviews and reputations and so on, but you can find decent output out there, like the right quality of light. But there’s a whole class of devices and that’s growing, that is like cheap wraparound belts and masks and things and simple lights that you can get on Amazon, these kinds of things, they often don’t have the wavelengths that they claim they do, and they often don’t have the output that they claim they do.
40:52
Speaker 2
How would you know?
40:54
Speaker 1
So the simplest way to find to know is to see if it has a fan. If the device doesn’t have a fan, it is likely not powerful enough to give you anything above a threshold dose that you need.
41:07
Speaker 2
Now, is that for a face mask too?
41:09
Speaker 1
I would say face mask is in a borderline because red light doesn’t need as much on the skin. But if you want that face mask to sort of penetrate more deeply into your skin and do any kind of work below the surface, you need a lot more power and you need near infrared light in there in order for it to be effective. But if you have, say, a wraparound belt looks like a neoprene type thing that it’s just, it can be studded with 100, 200 LEDs, but those LEDs will have 0.001 milliwatt output. And if it doesn’t have a fan to cool it down, it generally means that the power level, it’s not enough.
41:44
Speaker 1
And we see a lot of devices like this, and they often ride on the same general claims of the category what FDA has approved for pain and inflammation, et cetera. But they turn out to often below the threshold of the dose that’s needed. They’re very easy to make. Right? And this is why it’s very easy to get them as well. They’re very easy to produce. You just have tons of LEDs with micro output. But this doesn’t yield penetration. It doesn’t yield the kind of dose that you need. So that’s why, I mean, flexbeam is for us, the obvious way that we’ve designed it for. If you have a panel and you use it right, you can also get good quality output from that. There’s some just these caveats about how you use it. Right.
42:24
Speaker 1
But I would steer clear of a lot of those devices that are just that don’t have that kind of power in them. And there’s a lot of vanity stuff out there too. I mean, I know gyms are installing red light bulbs in the ceiling, which.
42:38
Speaker 2
So that does, I mean, that. That does nothing, right?
42:41
Speaker 1
That does nothing. No, that’s like you could put red lights in your studio lights here. It would be A nice red glow. But are you then getting any serious effect from it? No, it’s not. It’s not enough that the light is red. Right. It has to have a very specific output.
42:55
Speaker 2
We switched our bedroom lights to red just for the. So we could change it in the evening. Not because of therapeutic thing, but just because it’s going to help us prepare for sleep.
43:06
Speaker 1
Can be great for circadian rhythm, but has zero effect on your skin or bones.
43:10
Speaker 2
I’m not getting collagen and muscle, so I just want everyone to get that because I’ve talked about these Philips lights, but not for that, just to help with sleep. So the way yours works, it’s a wraparound. I’ve been using it since we got it for my foot because I have a foot fracture that I did when I was off teaching aerobics in Japan. And literally they’re like, you have to fuse your foot. I’m like, I’m not fusing my foot. And it got to the point where I couldn’t walk at all. It felt like I was getting stabbed. And this thing has like saved me, so I just carry it around and I mean, it’s easy to travel with. But how would you know?
43:47
Speaker 2
Because, you know, I could look at this, it seems that like a very clear case for chronic pain or osteoarthritis or an injury. But what about like, you know, aging in general or preventing injury? And I’ve been using around my foot, but now I’m like, well, do I need to get like 20 and wrap them all around my body? Like, what do we like, how would you tell someone to use this? Who’s the, you know, 50 plus year old who wants to be able to stay super active, reverse age, etc.
44:21
Speaker 1
So the most common use if you don’t have a particular injury or a particular muscle or particular weak point. Right.
44:27
Speaker 2
That’s the most obvious.
44:29
Speaker 1
You just described one with your ankle. Like, then it’s golden to have a targeted device. You could put it straight there. It’s very obvious and intuitive that’s, that’s where you use also can have profound systemic effects if you use it on your gut, along your spine, central parts of the body. And the idea you have to cover your entire body in light in order to get the benefits from near infrared light is, in our view, a myth. Because when you look at how the energy circulates in your body, if you get a good dose centrally where your body can absorb it, and you have a lot of light receptors along your spine and in Your gut lining, for example. This is probably one of my most popular protocols, the energy boost or system boost protocol.
45:13
Speaker 2
So just straight down your chest.
45:15
Speaker 1
Straight down your chest. I think it often calls for 30 to 40 minutes to really get a boost. But if you do this daily with the occasional break and over time, this is probably the best preventative measure you can have, both for your whole system really, for immuno defense and for preventing injuries. So a local injury needs to be treated locally, but if you give the body the energy generally so it can actually maintain capacity and improve its resilience, you’ll also see less issues. And this is actually one of the reasons why, I mean, Dr. Zullia that I co founded the company with, wanted to create a device was like she wanted, for preventive reasons. That’s the most powerful use. However, most people don’t use it for preventive reasons. They often turn to it when there is a problem. Right.
46:06
Speaker 2
I would imagine though that they might turn to it when they have a problem and then like get it because of that, but then start to use it for other things when they see the power of it. Yeah, I just wasn’t aware of it. Now, are there any early signs? Like, how would you know? Because prevention is the hardest thing ever to sell.
46:23
Speaker 1
Like it is.
46:24
Speaker 2
Right. I mean, people. But is there, are there any early signs that the. Your cells aren’t functioning as well as they should? Everyone’s talking about mitochondria, but I was like, I wish there was some really great ways to test this.
46:38
Speaker 1
Yeah.
46:38
Speaker 2
You know, I grip strength, fatigue. Like how would someone know that their cells need more energy. Yeah.
46:45
Speaker 1
I mean, there are different sort of different categories, different kinds of applications here. Of course. But if we’re staying first within the sort of muscle paradigm or the muscle box. Right.
46:55
Speaker 2
We love the muscle box.
46:56
Speaker 1
The muscle box. We see a lot of people have some sort of weaker muscle that often acts up first. If you’re getting overload from myself, I have. It’s my lower back from, I think a deadlift injury from many, many years ago. And I can keep it in check by using. I use FlexBeam every day in my morning and just use it on my back. Then I consider my back to be the symptom of something. It’s not just that the issue is there. It acts up when I am generally overloaded. Right. So if I treat it as a symptom and I don’t think about getting rid of the symptom, I treat it as a signal that I need to actually give My whole body, more energy in this area. That’s one way to approach it. It’s like in terms of prevention is.
47:42
Speaker 1
In terms of what is your. What is your known weak spot. Maybe you can target it there first and see how that builds over time. We work with professional athletes, like skiers, for example, that swear by this for their back. They often have back issues, and since they started using it and having a regular routine, their back doesn’t act up anymore. Right. And that’s the surest sign that something is working. It’s the absence of problems. The hardest thing to sell, as you say. Right.
48:08
Speaker 2
This is why when I used to see a lot of people one one, I’d always get all of their complaints and have them rate them to start. Because they come back and they go, nothing’s changed. And you’re like going, wait a minute, you limped in here. Now you skipped in and nothing changed. Like, people forget that they hurt.
48:25
Speaker 1
Yeah. And as soon as the issue is gone, it’s often is then gone from the mind as well. Right. So this is why it’s so important to find a kind of a simple, consistent routine over time. If you embed it into your life, and we designed it in such a way to make it super easy to use and that you don’t have to sit down or make a special appointment for it. Right. You can do it while you make dinner or in the car if you need to. Right. So that you do get that dose over time. Those are the ones that are reporting by far the most significant results. And often that is the absence of things that they used to hold them.
48:56
Speaker 2
Back so they need to keep like. So the foot would be a great example. I’ve been working with Dr. Ashu Goyal, who I adore, on regenerakine and some different types of biologics in my foot, too. And I’m guessing that I should be using this for the rest of my life. Like, you talked about your back. Like, when would you know? Oh, you know, I think it’s great. Do you back off or should you just prophylactically just continue to use it?
49:26
Speaker 1
I mean, this does depend on the condition and how severe it is. And I don’t know about your foot and how healed it is. It’s okay to take breaks for a while, but if you keep supporting it over time, you will also very likely notice that it’s not acting up the way it used to. I don’t think it’s always necessary to keep using it that, you know, tied to this Flex beam every day for your ankle. I mean, maybe if it is acting up every other day, then you have to keep using it. Right. So I wish I could give you a super straight answer, but it really depends on what you are treating.
49:58
Speaker 2
Well, you’re talking about giving cells more energy so they repair. And I think of that with muscle and how it rebuilds. So do you think that recovery is basically a bottleneck here? Like how much muscle someone could build, especially a woman? 40 Plus is recovery. What you see is probably the biggest bottleneck here.
50:19
Speaker 1
I think the biggest bottleneck is the lack of consistency because something is holding you back.
50:23
Speaker 2
Right. So if you have this, like if something starts to hurt, then you know you have this. You would use it like throughout on your chest to begin with, but you would use this if you trained hard, maybe the areas you trained hard on. Okay. This makes a ton of sense.
50:41
Speaker 1
So beyond the other symptom, if you’re outside of the muscle box, has to do with fatigue that you’re part of.
50:48
Speaker 2
That’s like overall body fatigue.
50:49
Speaker 1
Yeah, this affects a lot of people too. And this was one of the findings.
50:53
Speaker 2
Every perimenopause, a woman, everywhere.
50:57
Speaker 1
It’s a, it’s a huge. And it’s a growing problem. And it has various, like medical diagnoses and these kinds of things. It generally seems to be not well understood. I think the most plausible hypothesis is that it’s linked to mitochondrial deficiencies or mitochondrial dysfunction and so on. We see amazing results for people with chronic fatigue. We have done recently a study on mitochondrial efficiency, which followed an athlete group and also a chronic fatigue group. And while they both had results that were statistically significant in blood work, there was like, in the group that were reportedly fatigued, they had both subjectively felt between 30 to 40% better, like reduction of fatigue. But you could also literally see it in the biomarkers of the mitochondria. That’s not to say this is a cure all forms of fatigue by any means, but there is clearly.
51:52
Speaker 2
A why not give that a try? Are you kidding? 30% Plus.
51:57
Speaker 1
Yeah. For someone who’s then deflated and their experience is often that it’s like that compound energy, that it doesn’t come overnight as one thing, but it’s like one better night’s sleep and then a little bit better movement the next day and then more red light and then even better sleep and it compounds over several days and suddenly you find yourself doing things that you thought you couldn’t or that you miss doing.
52:19
Speaker 2
Where did they use the flex beam,.
52:21
Speaker 1
These people with chronic fatigue over central area, so they follow this. I’m so excited to try this central energy boost protocol.
52:29
Speaker 2
The energy boost protocol.
52:30
Speaker 1
And that will give you the dose that is like what you would need on a daily kind of the maximum. There’s no point in doing more. Right. But it is important that you get that significant dose and not just some like red light from a distance that doesn’t do anything. Right. That is just placebo.
52:45
Speaker 2
Yes, we’ve definitely established that. Okay, so beyond the flex beam, what else? What are the big habits that you do every day that you think make the biggest difference for your health? Your longevity?
52:58
Speaker 1
For myself, since this kind of discovery of the connection to light and so on, I try to be very mindful of my circadian rhythm. I don’t have a. I follow my own sleeping pattern. I don’t operate like a clock and on like always at the exact same time. But I do try to follow the sun and get sunlight early in the morning. I think it really helps and it’s clearly shown in the science that it helps to signal to your body what time of day it is and that helps you fall asleep at night.
53:29
Speaker 2
How do you do that in Norway in the winter?
53:31
Speaker 1
Yeah, that’s the hard part of that. FlexBeam becomes really handy, for example. So while I can use a bright blue light, for example, in day just to wake you. Near infrared light is a signaling similar to the sun. Right. So it’s at sunrise and sunset you have more red light, that’s more of the red and near infrared on the spectrum shows itself. So our sleep protocol, which is quite popular and it works for a lot of people, actually recommends that you start with it in the morning and not just at bedtime when you fall asleep. It can also be used then, but often the best effects are if you use it early in the day.
54:08
Speaker 1
So where I live in wintertime, when the sun doesn’t really rise until 10am, I can get up at 7 or 8 and I can still get a dose of near infrared. And it helps to signal to my body that it is daylight. Right. Or like that it’s the start of the day and this will help to regulate so that I’m more naturally tired at the end of the night.
54:27
Speaker 2
Yeah, I think people miss that if you really want to have good sleep cycles, it actually starts with what you do when you wake up. So for jet lag.
54:35
Speaker 1
Yes, it’s huge.
54:36
Speaker 2
I like this is fantastic. Because I have my jet lag protocol, I use My chieteness has helped me tremendously. But this is the other piece that I’ve been missing.
54:46
Speaker 1
Yeah, I think if you think of light as a biological signal, which it really is, it can be a very powerful way to signal to your body what’s like what time of day is it right. To help it regulate faster, to help not get out of whack. So I’m a big fan of sunlight generally in terms of, as a signaling and like being mindful around your circadian clock. And coming from Norway, I think we, I carry with me culturally the passion for nature and being outdoors when you can so just even go walk in the park or somewhere to be out in nature, to have that into your day.
55:28
Speaker 1
I think part of the reason why that is shown to be so effective and people report feeling better is actually because when you are out in a leafy neighborhood and the sun is out, that reflects a lot of the infrared. So you’re actually getting general exposure to sunlight conditions. Even if it’s not sunny, even if it’s a cloudy day, but leaves you like. Yeah. Because nature reflects it back to you. In an urban environment, in an asphalt jungle downtown, all the light is absorbed into the asphalt. So if you look at thermal cameras, for example, you can do those infrared cameras. You will see you drive through downtown Tampa. It’s just like all of that, it’s all gone. Once you get out to the shore or to like forested area or something. It’s all there. It’s being reflected.
56:13
Speaker 2
Well, besides the downtown Tampa has the most trees in a city of anywhere.
56:20
Speaker 1
Really?
56:20
Speaker 2
Yes.
56:21
Speaker 1
Okay.
56:21
Speaker 2
Isn’t that crazy? That is crazy.
56:22
Speaker 1
That’s a great plus.
56:23
Speaker 2
So who knew? I did not know that it was doing that for me.
56:26
Speaker 1
And I think that’s generally helpful and generally healthy to be exposed to. That doesn’t mean that you don’t need at all targeted light, for example, which is still. And we’re talking about muscle issues, health issues, all of that can compound if you can concentrate that light specifically. But having the ambience of the sun around your life and being mindful of the sun is for me the biggest gift of health.
56:51
Speaker 2
I think you’ve really captured two things that are two of the most exciting emerging things. And one of them is getting your light right because it’s just been ignored. So that’s a huge one. And then the other one is recovery. And you’ve got both of these. So light based therapies over the next five years, what do you think’s gonna happen? What do you hope’s gonna happen?
57:12
Speaker 1
Well, what I’m pretty confident is gonna happen is we’re gonna move from just having light sources and going from this current jungle of, like, which lamp should I do have the right output, et cetera, to actually more guidance around dosing, getting the appropriate light at the appropriate time for the appropriate condition. Here the science is also getting clearer. And now we’re being able. Now we’re able to build applications that can make this easier for people to follow. So I think it’s moving from just like, get a lamp and the bigger, the better or the cheaper, the easier to actually having light guided with us in everyday life. And I think it also extends to indoor lighting eventually to, like, some. And we’re also living with a lot of strange LED lighting indoors that can be disruptive for people.
58:00
Speaker 1
So it’s just more focus on what are the natural sources of light, because red and near infrared light is entirely natural light. Right. That you get these wavelengths that your body actually is craving and needing. Like, how can you apply them into your everyday life and make sure that you get that in a more precise way than just blasting yourself with a lamp? That’s where I see it going.
58:21
Speaker 2
We’re going to do some rapid fires. Ready?
58:23
Speaker 1
Okay, I’ll try.
58:24
Speaker 2
All right. Most overrated recovery tool.
58:29
Speaker 1
Massage gun.
58:31
Speaker 2
Most underrated sunlight. One daily light or movement habit. Every woman should start.
58:39
Speaker 1
Sorry, can you repeat that?
58:41
Speaker 2
1 Daily light or movement habit.
58:43
Speaker 1
Every woman should start getting light in the early hours in your AM Just sunlight in your eyes. Even if short.
58:51
Speaker 2
Tell my husband that. I swear he is like a mole. He has everything he wants, and then he turns all the lights off. And I’m like, dude, get out. Look at the sun. Turn the lights on, come on.
59:00
Speaker 1
Helps to reset. And it doesn’t need a lot of time. You don’t need to go out and tan. You just need to get light into your eyes. I think it’s very powerful and simple.
59:06
Speaker 2
One myth about red light therapy you.
59:08
Speaker 1
Wish would disappear for good, that more is better. So if you have good effects from it and you’ve been amazed by something and you keep blasting yourself and you go for hours and you think that more is better. No, it isn’t.
59:23
Speaker 2
Everything is the dose. So how can people learn more about FlexBeam?
59:29
Speaker 1
Go to recharge Health. That’s the name of our company. We have a lot of guidance, both an app and scientific studies, and more background information. We have a whole range of ambassadors from, like, Norwegian superstars in sports that have used this for years, including our national team in football that recently visited the World cup here locally stuff. So there’s a lot of information there for people who want to learn more. And it’s also, of course, where you can buy one for yourself and get it sent to your house.
59:59
Speaker 2
So you can. These are available over the counter. You can buy them. You can. Fantastic. Yep. I know. I was looking at going, I think I’m going to have to get another one because I think Tim and I are going to be fighting over this now and then. Now the dogs are using it too.
01:00:14
Speaker 1
Yeah. In a household. It’s a go to device that can be used by multiple people. Right. So sometimes maybe you need more than one.
01:00:21
Speaker 2
Yeah. Well, you know what I love about it? It’s very easy to travel with because that’s been my biggest challenge with these is like the panels weigh a ton. It’s not like you.
01:00:29
Speaker 1
They weigh a ton and you have to plug them into the wall. This is rechargeable and it’s battery driven so you can take it with you. Use a battery driven to get that.
01:00:37
Speaker 2
Circadian rhythm set so it’s.
01:00:40
Speaker 1
You can travel with in hand luggage quite easily. And we’ve had this on the market now for several years, so we extended our warranty to five years because it holds up really well with durability over time. And we give it also people, 60 day, what we call open purchase in Norway or a money back guarantee, as you would say in America.
01:00:57
Speaker 2
Yeah. I bet you have no one returning these. It’s like no one will ever return it, I can promise you that. I’m going to put this@jburgin.com recharge to make it easy. And I just want to caution everybody. It’s like, this stuff is super exciting. Love this unit. It’s been amazing for my foot. And beware of all the junk out there.
01:01:22
Speaker 1
Yeah. And don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater for that reason. When you see a lot of junky stuff or that’s called red light therapy, it doesn’t mean that red light therapy doesn’t work because you bought something on Amazon that didn’t work. The core of the technology is very well scientifically validated and if you can use it in the right way and have a trusted source, then you can get a lot out of it.
01:01:45
Speaker 2
Amen. All right, one last question. Imagine you are sitting across from the woman listening today and she is overwhelmed, she’s confused and she’s also worried about her future. So give her your light and recovery prescription. Three things that she should start doing this week and then three things she doesn’t need to worry about.
01:02:10
Speaker 1
First, get sunlight in the early hours after you wake up, just face the sun in the morning. Try to go to sleep at regular times as well so they link to the circadian rhythm and get yourself a flex beam to try to integrate it into your everyday life. Easy.
01:02:28
Speaker 2
Okay. And what should she stop worrying about?
01:02:31
Speaker 1
I think she’d just stop worrying about doing everything wrong or doing anything around light wrong. If she has the fundamentals around sunlight and she has a near infrared light device that she can use and follow instructions, you don’t need to worry about anything else when it comes to light.
01:02:48
Speaker 2
So again, I’m going to put everything@jjvirgin.com recharge I am it is great to have dinner with you and spend time. I’ve been looking forward to this and really unpacking all of this. Now I’m even more obsessed with this piece of equipment. And again, I think we’re going to have a little household fight over it. But I will.
01:03:06
Speaker 1
We’ll get you another one.
01:03:08
Speaker 2

The use of any information provided on the show is solely at your own risk. You know, when we talk about menopause, the focus is almost always on hormones. But what I’ve learned is that’s only part of the picture. Because this phase of life doesn’t just affect your hormones, it affects how your brain works, your energy, how you feel day to day. And a big part of that comes down to your cells. Your cells rely on something called phospholipids. These are the building blocks of your cell membranes and they’re essential for how your brain functions, how your cells communicate, and how your body operates overall.
01:05:45
Speaker 2
As estrogen declines, your body’s natural production of key phospholipids can shift, which can impact things like mental clarity and overall resilience. That’s why I started focusing on supporting this more foundational layer. One of the things I added into my routine is Body Bio PC. It’s a phospholipid complex that helps support cell membrane health, brain function and liver function. Basically helping your body get building blocks. It needs to function well. And what I like about this is that it’s not just about chasing symptoms, it’s about supporting how your body works at a deeper level. So you’re supporting things like clearer thinking, better focus, and feeling more like yourself again. And of course, Body Bio is known for really high quality practitioner trusted formulations. So if you’re in perimenopause or menopause and feel like something is still missing, this is definitely worth looking into.
