JJ Virgin: [00:00:00] I have got one of my besties back on the show. Dr. Kellyann Petrucci. She is a weight loss expert, natural anti-aging specialist, and really the queen of bone broth. She is the person who put bone broth on the map with her bone broth diet and her cleanse and reset book, where she shows you how to use bone broth to lose weight de-age,
heal your gut and many fast. So we'll be diving into all of that stuff, you probably seen her on Dr. Oz and or good morning America or on public television. She's been all over the place and now she's here with us. So we will be right back to dive into all things, bone broth, and to get your commitment, to start drinking it daily, stay with me.
I am so excited that I have the queen of [00:01:00] bone broth and one of my best friends on with me. And it's been way too long. So Dr. Kellyann welcome.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: Thank you so much. And it has been way too long. The last time we were talking offline. The last time we actually had a podcasty type chat was like way back in like 2013, 14.
That's insane.
JJ Virgin: Why have you made it so hard to get on my podcast? Why wouldn't you come play with me?
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: I'll always come play with you. You are a priority. And the real question is, was podcasting even out then. Like we must've been one of the first.
JJ Virgin: Way back when, well, what you were the first one on is really getting, I mean, bone broth's like a nourishing tradition, as we know, but really you got it on the map.
People were not talking about it. And I think where I'd love to start with this interview because we are going to dig deep into bone broth. Double triple dare you listener to that. You will be running out [00:02:00] after this and getting yourself on bone broth if you're not already using it. So I want to first make sure that people really know what bone broth is, so they aren't going out and getting some.
Soup. So break it down,
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: sister, I call it can of salt by the way. And I love how you open up the discussion with that, because I can't tell you how many interviews I've had. And at the end, I think to myself, oh, Was that was that really delineated that I am not talking about a can of soup. I'm not talking about going out to your store and throwing a can of chicken broth in your cart.
That's not what we're saying. What we're saying is get in on something. That's far more nutrient dense and nutrient density is one of those buzz words and nutrition that we love, because what it means nutritional density means it has a whole lot of good nutrition that your cells are usually starving for and lower calories.
So that's [00:03:00] like the Mac daddy of all of nutrition, and that's the lever that bone broth pulls and that's why I love it. So if you're wondering what it is, it's basically. Bones that have been simmered over a period of time. And when that happens, that's kind of the lock and key and when the magic happens, because in someone's in the cartilage of bones, What happens is in that cartilage, there's a gelatinous material.
And that gelatinous material is called collagen. And collagen is essential. If you want beauty, if you want health, if you want to be slimmer, you just want to look, kind of have that uplifted, youthful appearance. Can't do it without collagen. Ain't going to happen. But when you take that cartilage, and you simmer it,
all of that collagen comes out and that cooked collagen is gelatin and gelatin makes me want to do about 20 [00:04:00] somersaults. When I think about everything that gelatin does. And by the way, getting back to your initial kind of transpose, that's not a can of soup. You can't get it in a can of soup. Never did. You never will.
It's completely different. So I love bone broth because it has all this nutrition in and we can talk even more about the nutrition, but it's this cartilage that becomes cooked that becomes this beautiful collagen. And then that turns into this gelatin and that gelatin and all kind of say the magic. Is the ultimate in gut healing.
I defy anyone to tell me there's anything better to heal and seal the gut than gelatin.
JJ Virgin: So if you were having this and you don't have the gooey jelly stuff, Then it's not bone broth. There's no party.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: There's absolutely
JJ Virgin: no party. There's no bone broth party happening there. Like if you're opening a can of soup and you put it in the fridge and it's just [00:05:00] liquid, this is not bone broth.
And I, you know, you write the bone broth. Diet book way back when like totally put bone broth on the map and cause no one had thought about using it as a diet tool, but you showed how you could really lose weight fast with this. So how does that happen?
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: Yeah, so what I did was I first discovered bone broth and I want to just backtrack just for a half a second.
When I studied different cultures, when I studied ancestral nutrition and I studied, you know, what was working and I wanted to study these bands and history because history gives us so many diamonds and there was so much there. And one of the stories that was perplexing to me was Florence Nightingale going into these hospitals with this thing called bone broth.
And she brought it into all of these hospitals because the thought was. And it was actually proven to be true for so many that it opens [00:06:00] up the gut to healing. It opens up the guts to healing. I thought, oh my gosh, you know, I have to figure out what this is and the more I read and the more I read, I became so fascinated.
And then I stumbled across this article. It was in the new England journal of medicine. So that's kind of like the highest research point for a lot of us looking to substantiate what we want to talk about in nutrition. And here it was right in front of me, clear as day. And the article stated that by the way, there are definitely foods that we are designed to eat.
Make no mistake about it. Zebras there's foods that they're supposed to eat. Tigers there's stuff they're supposed to eat and humans there's stuff we're supposed to eat. So then, you know, you put personal play in it, you put personal play. What is your lifestyle? Like? What is your history like, blah, blah, blah, all that always personal play, but make no mistake about it.
There are foods that were designed to work with our [00:07:00] body to reach the highest efficiency. So I said, okay, could this bone broth be one of those foods? And the more I kind of looked at the research, and then I looked at this, this broth, I thought, oh my gosh, this is one of those, those superhero foods. So what I did was I tested it.
I took three different cities, lA New York and Detroit. And I took a bunch of people of all different walks of life. And I said, what would happen? Like, what is the biggest problem that I have in practice? So I've done this over 20 years. What is the biggest issue? What do people come to me for? They actually come to me because they feel like they're aging, like rapid-fire and all of those things that go along with that, the fatigue, the saggy skin, the bloatedness, the belly that pops out when you eat one little tiny thing, I can't lose weight.
And when I do lose it, two months later, it just starts piling back on, even faster. I thought, what, what can, can this [00:08:00] ancestral food actually help that? And I thought, well, what would I do with a patient? What would be the highest performing. The highest performing thing that I can do for a patient.
They came in with that problem. I would tell them fasting. You can get your body to go through some kind of fasting process. That would be the most beneficial thing you can do. Here's the problem. Here's the real world problem. I would see so many women that were encased in so many different things in their lives, whether it be they're working and trying to balance a family, whether they've got a bunch of kids at home and they can't get out as much, or they've got a medical issue or this issue.
Or they feel tired. They feel shaky all of these reasons why fasting wasn't the absolute best thing for them. I thought, I wonder if I can use this bone broth and fast them? Could I, and that was really the Genesis and the kind of the backbone of the bone broth diet. It was saying, okay, I found this thing. I, it, [00:09:00] coincidentally, coincidentally made all these people lose weight.
It made all these people lose weight and I realized. It's a fasting tool. It is the best fasting tool because when I tested out these three cities, they got the same exact results sipping on bone broth and having one light macro condensed type of meal at night, as they did as the control groups who just purely fasted.
And I thought, okay, this. This is evidence that's so unbelievable. I can have people do what I've always wanted them to do, which is to eat healthy, or get more nutrients, nutrients, and toxins out, and I can get them the fast now. Oh my God. This is what I've been waiting for.
JJ Virgin: Well, and it's not painful.
That's the cool thing. It's like fasting without the painful fasting, right?
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: That's it. In a nutshell, it's what I say is the white knuckling. You gotta white knuckle through [00:10:00] so much in life. And there's, there's something to be said for getting results. And understanding that when you're trying to achieve something and you can certainly say this about fitness, JJ, like there's so many ways that you can work out and get what you're trying to achieve.
So going into the gym or wherever you're going and hating it every day is not the. And so what I always say is, okay, what is it that you like, what is it that works for you? And how can we make this work? How can we work in the confines confines of what, what you're trying to gain your, the ROI you're looking to achieve.
And I just found that with bone broth and using bone broth as a fasting tool, which was the biggest highlight, it was so unbelievable. And there are reasons why that it gets the results that it gets. And. We always talk about this whole idea of inflammation and it's kind of like beaten to a pulp, you know, gut health inflammation, but here's the thing [00:11:00] when you have a nutritional tool like bone broth and.
Takes that inflammation. That's like this forest fire that you can't shut off. And it's interesting. Inflammation is a really interesting guy, because if you have a sore throat or if you break your elbow, you want that inflammation. You want it to come in there. You want those white blood cells to go in there in case that area and start doing its thing.
The problem is when it keeps doing its thing and doesn't shut off. And that's what so many of us have. Which is why we're walking around with things like rosacea and psoriasis and autoimmune disturbances and diabetes, and even heart disease. All of these common underpinnings to every modern day disease, we have happens to stem from this thing called inflammation and this ability to not shut the spigot off.
So when you go in there and you heal and seal the. [00:12:00] That makes a tremendous difference. And that's why we hear so much today. You know, everyone's talking about gut health, gut health, gut health, and I studied Swiss matters medicine back in the nineties, up through in England. And I'm telling you the gut health was such a big thing back then, and I'm really happy.
That I was able to do something and bring something back to the table that helped with this gut health thing. Because when you can take this inflammation, bring it down, you can heal the gut and here's kind of the final prong and you can teach the body to be what I call a natural fat burner. You got it.
You got the whole thing and being a natural fat burner means that your blood sugar knows what to do because most of us have blood sugar. That's gone completely wonkie. You eat something and your blood sugar. Can't figure out what to do. The door should be opening to go into the cells and it's closing or it's [00:13:00] closing, and it should be opening.
And the streamline from having your pancreas work properly, having your blood system, having insulin, go through your blood and your pancreas and do everything it's supposed to do, it gets all messed up. So when you can get your blood sugar to function the way you want it to do. You think so clearly like brain fog and depression and sadness and, and irritability.
So much of this has to do with blood sugar. So you really need these three things in anything, any diet program out there. And I won't mention some of the big hitters that are out there, highly commercialized. I, I kind of feel disdained for all of them. And here's why, because I know after doing this for so many years and having women sit in front of me from all walks of life, I know I've heard their stories.
And I know for a fact, if they are [00:14:00] not doing something that reduces their blood, that reduces inflammation, heals their gut and trains their body to be this natural fat burner, it ain't going to work. Long-term. And that's why you have the cycle of madness. And that's why you have all of these things going on that are really displeasing to so many people that I hear all the time.
It's because they're not stepping in the right direction. Our feet has to be in all those buckets.
JJ Virgin: You know, I had a great mentor early on, who said you don't lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight. And what you're talking about is using bone broth to heal the gut. And to help stabilize your blood sugar so that your body can use stored fat for fuel because you've gotten healthier.
And so, you know, the, the simple thing is, oh yeah, we're going to use bone broth. We'll use it when you're fasting. So you won't be as hungry. You'll get a lot of nutrients. But the reality is, is because it's doing all of these healing things, reducing inflammation, balancing blood sugar, healing, the gut. [00:15:00] So what's fantastic is you, you have something that's giving you the.
Immediate results that you want, which we know that when people lose weight fast, they tend to lose more weight and keep it off. So we got to have something we need to have that win, but then it also is going to help keep it off and keep you healthy. And gosh, you think about over the last year or two boy, or were our guts taking a hit with all of this stress?
There was ever a time we needed bone broth. It was the last year or two, right?
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: I agree. And here's something that might blow people's minds, JJ. Cause I know you know this and we've actually talked about this. Not everybody does. And so many people are feeling anxiety. And they're feeling depression and they're just feeling this overall kind of sadness.
Guess where all almost all. Let me just clarify that almost all of your feel-good hormones come from. [00:16:00] They're actually brewed like a cauldrons brew in the gut. So just think about it this way. If you want that serotonin, and you want that dopamine, which charge these positive emotions that you want flooding through your body, you do every day, you want this.
This is what we all crave ultimately, if you are depleting that you're depleting the stores by not having a healthy. You're not dealing with a full deck and see, we, we were given these, you know, these, these Trump cards, we were giving these, these positive things that we have, that we can anchor off of and work on all the time.
And if you don't take advantage of them, that's a shame. And gut health is one of those things. When you get your gut health in order your brain functions better because there absolutely is a thing of this gut brain axis. It exists.
JJ Virgin: So you look at this and go, all right, it's helping with [00:17:00] mood. It's helping with brain. But there's a lot of other stuff that it's doing as well. I mean, you know, I look at you, Missy, and it's like, it's like, wait a minute. I've known you now what, eight years you look like you, you just keep getting better and better and better.
And, you know, I know
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: it's learning more stuff. You know, that's why, you know, you. Look a fraction of your age, JJ, you know, stuff. And that's like, I feel, I feel like that's part of my job. Part of my job with women is to teach them the stuff that I know so they can feel the same about themselves. Because when I look at a woman and I see her aging
really rapidly. And I know you do this, we can't help it. We've been in this industry so long when you're in an airport or anywhere you're doing your bionic scan, you just do. It's just what we do. And you think, oh my gosh, this woman really needs ceramides. Like all of those, those deep wrinkles in her face, she needs, she needs some [00:18:00] ceramides and she needs some hydration and she needs some broth.
And when I look at someone and I see that they don't have the skeletal muscle, they don't have that tightness that they want. They diet, but they're not getting that, that physique and that's, that can be solved things like bone broth have glycine in them. And this is a really interesting amino acid because one of the compositions of bone broth is this, this amino acid profile that it has.
And glycine is, is so interesting because it helps you lose weight without losing your muscle. And that's why when people are losing weight, doing things like collagen and doing things like bone broth, they don't have that mushy. They have that really you know, that astonishing looking physique it's because of that.
And again, it's that connective tissue and it's that all that upbuilding, we will always want to think, you know, what's not catabolic was anabolic. What is building to the. [00:19:00] And so everything I try to teach and help people discover is upbuilding to their body. So they have those white, bright eyes. They have that beautiful skin and have the shiny hair.
They have the physique that works best for their body. They feel strong. They don't feel tired all the time. You have to realize for those listening and you're feeling like, well, you know, I'm this age and I had kids and I work. And the thing is I went through a real, trying time in my life. And I, I hit a wall when I was about 40.
And I remember when I reached out to people, the expectation is while you have kids now and. And that doesn't make sense because if you look at medicine and you look at data, the way you're supposed to, that would have to be a genetic fact, it would have to be a genetic fact. So if your. And you're starting to fall apart.
That means that everybody, that turns 40 should be falling apart and that it's not true. [00:20:00] And again, it goes to this whole, the whole science behind, of course, epigenomes and all of that, meaning that really the trigger in a lot of the decisions on how your body is going to age has to do a lot with your decisions and what you do on a regular basis.
What do you choose to put your body in what environment? What environment are you saying? Okay. To all of the time. And it better be one that works for your body, because if not. That everyday chink, chink, chink, chink, chink away. That is what ages you, and it can be something as simple. Like we're not thinking of like the people that you have in your life.
You know, how many times do you say yes when you should say no? No. All of these kinds of personal decisions that we. All of these things, you know, outside of bone broth, they age you as well. So it's just, again, it's knowing stuff and it's knowing how to execute decisions and how [00:21:00] to really take control of your lifestyle.
And one of the things that I've done lately, and I would recommend it to anyone to just try to find a way. To do this, even in part and parcel, if you can, which is have a day of wellness in any way that you can, any way that you can add that in try to do just, even if you have a cognizant awareness that today I'm going to be kinder to myself, whatever it is that you can do with that.
Like I have Sunday wellness days and my kids are older now and they're on their own and things are easier for me in that, in that respect. But just whatever you can do to make Sundays or whatever day, your wellness day. I know you do this too JJ. Tell me it doesn't make a big difference.
JJ Virgin: Well, I got up this morning.
I went to sound healing meditation followed by hot yoga.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: Now see that to me. And by the way, hot yoga flow, you better have a partner because hot yoga awakens your sexuality in a way that I [00:22:00] cannot even believe. I don't know how long you've been doing it, but if you're feeling more perky than normal, I love hot yoga.
JJ Virgin: I have this super hottest husband ever, and what's super fun is we go to yoga together and I look around like, I will tell you full disclosure. I only started doing yoga, I think three years ago. And when I first started going, I picked the class that had as many old men as possible
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: because
JJ Virgin: they tend to be less flexible and I could feel like I wasn't the absolute worst in the room.
And I thought I was getting, I fashioned myself that I was really a Yogi and then last summer, Tim and I went to a class in Encinitas, California, and I didn't check where, where we were going. It just fit in the schedule. Next thing I know I'm in 110 degree room with. You know, 12 year old yogis and I went, oh, no, standing on one [00:23:00] toe with their foot behind their head.
And we, we really had a schooling that day were like, we really, we really need to do something about this. This isn't going to work. So. Anyway, that's that's when we decided we are going to do the real thing. So we are the, like, we're the old people in the room and we are totally, I was like, we are so keeping up, we're like jamming in there.
I'm very pleased with myself and it's made a massive difference. So it does
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: not surprise me. I could see you doing like, bending, like a pretzel, knowing you.
JJ Virgin: It's so good. I'm so happy about the whole thing. So that's been fun. And I, I think the real important thing here, the point out is. You can use something as a catalyst to help change everything else in your life.
And I really think that bone broth can be that catalyst. So getting the bone, bone broth diet, making a commitment to start drinking bone broth, adding in those mini fasts that you have people do on the bone broth plan twice a week. [00:24:00] To help what I call cross, train your diet to create caloric variability.
So you're not dealing with 15 year. Yeah. Right. You, you know, we, we know in exercise that you cross train that if you do the same thing all the time that you stop getting the results and that you lead yourself to bigger injuries and it's boring as hell. However, we don't do that in diet and diet. You need to cross train your diet, just like exercise so that you're doing caloric and carb variability.
Right. And so it makes a ton of sense. So I think the great thing here is, is grab bone broth. Incorporate that into your diet. I do it as part of me. I have bone broth protein. I know you do too. I do as part of my smoothie every day, and then you can get it and keep it in the fridge. It's a great thing to sip on because you want to move out of any kind of snacking, like stop snapping.
But if you're feeling hungry, you can, you can use the bone broth to help you through so that you're not having the. You know, the pain of the fast. So it really is a great catalyst [00:25:00] that then you can start to go. Okay. I think I'll start to add some, some you know, I'll add in a cold plunge or I'll add in hot yoga or I'll add in some meditation.
So start with the one thing and bone broth is a great one thing that makes such a massive difference in you've seen it. You might start with it for weight loss, but all of a sudden you're looking younger. Your gut feels better. You're thinking better. You're happier. It's like. So many side benefits,
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: success begets success.
That's a fact. That's, that's like a, that's a, that's a scientific fact. When you start feeling success in one area, like you said, you, you, you naturally to natural inclination to want to go onto the next success prong. There's the next success level. So, you know, just like yoga, the reason why yoga works so profoundly well, It's actually called yoga chikitsa, and what it means is yoga openings.
So when you do yoga, you start opening the body. You start opening these, these [00:26:00] openings, create this, this flood of healing because you have this prana this, this healing that runs through your body. You do the same thing through, like you said, carbon caloric variability, it really does continue to shock and reset the body in a way where it starts to respond very efficiently.
It's not normal for anyone in anything really that you do to do the same thing all of the time and not continue to get results. You want to constantly change things up and shockl things just like we do with our own personal lives. We always want to, we want adventure. After a while when we don't feel adventure or we don't feel like we're discovering or reading or doing new things, we don't feel that growth.
It's the same thing in your body, your body craves, the same thing. And so bone broth, like you said, is that great first prong to take, start with two cups a day. If you don't want to do a program, just start getting it in your body. Replace bone broth with [00:27:00] snacks. Snacking is the one sure thing that you can do.
If you want to put weight on it is the one thing
JJ Virgin: roughly snacking late at night. You want to mess everything up. Have an after dinner snack. That's it? That is like game over. You messed it up. Like shut the kitchen down after dinner. That is like of anything. Just shut it down.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: I love that role and start learning.
If you're going to snack start learning on what things that you can snack on safely, like take some blueberries and throw them in the freezer seriously. And you know, you know, with
JJ Virgin: no Kellyann people, here's the thing. And then we're going to wrap. Cause we can get on a rant on this forever. Reality is you don't need to snack.
Like you really don't, you just need to stop it because is something that's become so ingrained. And so if someone's used to having five or six meals a day, I say, let's start with like, getting that fat protein fiber in and getting it [00:28:00] down to three in a snack. Then let's push out that snack. Then let's get it down to two to three.
You don't need to snack.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: You do absolutely is genetically biologically on any there's no system in your body that requires it. There's no RDA. That requires it. There's absolutely no reason for it. The most. The, the, reason why most people do this is because I talked about that dopamine. And I talked about that serotonin, they're looking for a feel good hit.
And you, got that's why exercise and all these other wellness protocols that we've been talking about, it ends up replacing the need for snacking. It just does. So, and we can sit here and say this till the cows come home, you'll have to see it and experience it for yourself.
JJ Virgin: Yes. So your marching orders and I've got something for you to make this easier, but marching orders are just to start with bone broth.
It makes it so simple. And you have a really cool recipe library. We're going to be giving to everybody [00:29:00] jjvirgin.com/DKA for Dr. Kellyann and you will get her recipes. And I'm sure there's a recipe for bone broth in there. Isn't there. Hell to the yeah! And here's the thing. If you're like me, you do not make bone broth, unless Kellyanne comes over to your house and makes it for you, which hasn't happened.
You came over and made bone broth and I made you work out. It was a total perfect even trade. And then we did, we did facials in the sauna. That was hilarious. We'll have to do it again. And then we can cold call, but grab the recipe library. That's JJvirgin.com/DKA, and just commit to getting in two cups of bone broth a day. That's your starting point commit there.
And then the next thing to do is shut that darn kitchen down and make sure that you stop eating at least three hours before bed. And don't go to bed later. Just go to go to bed. Get, I always like to take a hot bath, like wait until you see what I put in my house. I have this really amazing hot. Bath tub room that I created.
And I get in and do Epsom salts, hot baths at night because you know what, when [00:30:00] you're in the bath you're not eating. I mean, you could, but that would be so weird and wrong. So if you're a like eater at night, just stay in the bathtub.
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: I end every day, every day with an Epsom salt bath, that's just my, that's my stress management technique.
That's what I do. It's you know, it's total.
JJ Virgin: So you hotels that have gotten rid of your bathtub, shame on you is what
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: I have to say. Oh my God. I remember one time we went, where did we go? And I said, I have no bathtub in my room and you totally got it to me. It was traumatic and devastating. And you were just like, oh my God, no bathtub.
You can use mine. Like you totally got it. Like you have to,

Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: time.
And you might just try and stop me.
JJ Virgin: All right. Thank you, honey. Lots of
Dr. Kellyann Petrucci: love.[00:31:00]
