Chia: the very word meant “strength” in ancient Mayan. This tiny black seed was a dietary staple, as well as a form of currency going back 5,500 years to the dawn of recorded Meso-American history.
Amazonian warriors are said to have used special drinks containing chia seeds to power through days-long hikes in the jungle in pursuit of enemies or prey, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles before stopping to rest. (Sounds like a protein shake to me…)
From Mayan Rainforest to the Concrete Jungle
While you and I might spend more time putting out fires at the office than tracking jaguars through the rainforest, an energy boost is still just as welcome! And while these small but powerful ch-ch-ch-chia! seeds were made famous by Chia Pets in the 1970s, they are so much more than a wacky gift from your Aunt Sue.
Chia seeds are extremely nutritious: they’re 25% omega-3 fatty acids with impressive health benefits. (Find out more in this quick read.) An ounce of chia seeds also contains about 5 grams of protein and a whopping 11 grams of fiber.1 That goes a long way toward keeping your gut functioning healthily. Fiber is also key to naturally lowering your cholesterol levels.2
What else makes chia seeds so great?
When these little beauties are soaked, they absorb up to twelve times their weight in liquid and develop a jelly-like coating. That means they can keep you feeling full and slow down your digestion of carbohydrates and sugars.3,4 Their high water content also helps you stay hydrated and maintains your electrolyte balance.
Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a full-time Amazon, this tiny superfood clearly packs the punch you need to make it through your day!
